Outside, crashing lightning and thunder competing for dominance. The cabin seemed to creak under the pressure, but there was a calmness in Ben as there always was, a steadiness that contrasted with the tempest outside.
"Are you okay?" he asked, a hint of concern in his eyes. His arm touching mine was spreading warmth all through me.
"Yeah, just not used to this kind of weather," I whispered, my awe mingling with a tinge of fear. I jumped as thunder crashed and stood, uncertain how I felt about the stormâor my feelings for Ben.
"You scared?" Ben's voice, steady and reassuring, cut through the chaos outside.
"A little," I admitted, as I walked to the window and pressed my forehead against the cool glass.
"It's something you get used to," he replied, his eyes fixed on the turbulent sky.
His calmness was contagious, and as the thunder roared and the cabin creaked, I sat back down on the creaky couch. His hand found mine and he ran his thumb along the back of my hand. I looked at him as he pulled a blanket from the back of the couch around my shoulders. I nestled closer to him. It felt so good to snuggle into him.
I admitted, "I've never seen tornado weather before. It's kind of freaking me out."
"We all have something that scares us."
The cabin trembled with each thunderous boom. Without a word, he shifted closer, surprising me by asking, "Is it alright?" he hesitated, "This?â He indicated his arm around me.
I glanced at him, taken aback by the unexpected question. I nodded as his arm pulled me close. The warmth of his touch was surprisingly soothing, and the tension that had gripped me moments ago began to melt away.
"Yeah, it's... nice, actually. Is this normal for Minnesota summers? I've never seen a storm like this.â
âIt can be intimidating, especially if it's new to you. But storms pass. Always."
"I hope so," I murmured, my gaze fixed on the flashes of lightning illuminating the darkened sky.
"Hey," Ben said, his voice gentle. "Look at me."
I turned to him, meeting his calm gaze.
"We'll be alright. Trust me," he assured, his words a balm to my anxious soul.
I couldn't help but notice the contrast in our personalities. Ben, with his reserved and serious demeanor, seemed surprisingly calm in the face of the storm. Meanwhile, I, the adventurous and bubbly traveler, found myself feeling afraid. I had never witnessed tornado weather before, and the unpredictable nature of it all made my heart race.
" If we all have something that scares us, what are you afraid of?"
A wry smile played on his lips. "Flying."
"Flying?" I laughed, surprised by the revelation.
Ben shrugged and tipped his head back. "Iâm a solid ground, earth beneath my feet kind of guy, you know?"
"Interesting,â I replied. "I just fly so often. I never think about it. Itâs just part of life.â
âAnd here in Minnesota, storms are part of life.â He smiled, his eyes meeting mine, and I felt myself melt on the inside.
"Keep that between us, okay?"
"Your secret's safe with me.
